MOTAT has a 3ft 6in gauge railway at the Sir Keith Park Memorial site which is near the zoo on Motions Road. Entrance to either part of the museum--Great North Road Site or the Sir Keith Park Memorial site gives you entrance to the other site at any later date. Entrance is $10 for adult. MOTAT is open from 10 - 3 weekdays and 10 - 4 at weekends. There is an electric tram line using preserved trams which runs from the Great North Road site to the zoo.
The other working steam loco, the Y class tank, is currently away on an extended stay at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.

At the engine shed end of the line. L207 has formed its train and reversed it into the platform ready for the first train of the day. |
Before the first train. L207 goes to take water. |
Backing down beside the loco shed to take water. |
At the aircraft hanger end of the line, L207 runs round. |
There's quite a steep climb on the return and then a sharp curve to make it worse. L207 with no sanding gear slipped to a stop on wet rails and then slithered slowly round the corner. |
In a light drizzle, the loco struggles on greasy rails. |
Still struggling L207 makes the middle of the curve. The loco finally made it without having to set back. |
In slightly better weather, the Avonside runs round again at the top end. |
The railway runs irregularly with no annually planned steaming days. School holidays are the most likely reason to operate. Call MOTAT on 09-846-0199 or fax 09-846-4242 for details of future operating days.
